Stonehouse

Officers' Mess in Stonehouse Barracks being laid for a formal dinner.

Shame about the dull weather. And sad really to see the parade ground being used as a car park.

Lunch at The Fig Tree @ 36.

My grandfather had been a mere Quartermaster sergeant (QMS) at Stonehouse Barracks, so he won't have been using the Officers' Mess, but I had been given the rare privilege of a tour and it was exceedingly pleasant to hang out with the upper ranks for an hour or two and was shown a fascinating number of paintings, furniture and artefacts that have been collected by or given to the marines.

And where else for lunch but the The Fig Tree at 36, Admiralty Street, Stonehouse? On my father's birth certificate, 36, Admiralty Street was the address given for his parents, so they and the new baby will have lived in the accommodation - probably rooms on one floor and a share of a cooker on the landing, it has been suggested - in what is now the current restaurant owners' home.

Syros Carnival 2019

Συριανό Καρναβάλι 2019 - Syros Carnival 2019

Putting this on the bucket list for a future year: Carnival in Ermoupoli on the island of Syros in the Cyclades, Greece. Syros Carnival is a three-day-event with festivities on the Saturday night - the traditional Zeibekia (masquerade) custom in Markos Vamvakaris Square - in Ano Syros, a procession along the harbour front on the Sunday afternoon that culminates in dancing in Miaoulis Square, with a Latin party on the Protopapadaki pedestrian street and, on Καθαρή Δευτέρα (Ash Monday or Clean Monday), the customs of Koulouma with kite flying in the countryside and particularly in Gallissas village.

The dates of Clean Monday in Greece tell us when this carnival takes place.

Photos and videos from Syros Carnival 2019

Syros also features in The 8 Best Greek Destinations to Celebrate Easter, as it is perhaps the only place in the world where Catholics celebrate Easter with the Orthodox in all the churches of the island. I really like that idea.

Burial of the Sardine

Sardine in it's funeral procession on the way to its cremation

Fake clergy

Assorted mourners

Ash Wednesday's Burial of the Sardine at Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is meant to herald the end of Carnival, only it doesn't. It isn't a burial, it's a cremation; the clergy aren't real clergy, the wailing widow's aren't real women, even the chicharro (sardine) turned out to be an Atlantic horse mackerel
