Researchers Identify Characteristic Chemical Signature for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a mysterious and maddening condition, with no cure or known cause. But researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, using a variety of techniques to identify and assess targeted metabolites in blood plasma, have identified a characteristic chemical signature for the debilitating ailment and an unexpected underlying biology: It is similar to the state of dauer, and other hypometabolic syndromes like caloric restriction, diapause and hibernation.

Teekee and Baloo

Teekee a very special lady

Baloo professional cat watcher

Recently returned for a couple of days day care, Teekee and Baloo. While Teekee found a quiet corner to curl up next to me, Baloo was back to his usual position watching cat Balu.

Could you have a wheat sensitivity? Biomarkers found for the first time

Wheat field

A wheat sensitivity is not fun. The condition is associated with nasty gut symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain or diarrhoea – plus other things like fatigue, headache, anxiety, memory or cognitive disturbances, and leg or arm numbness.

There’s no cure for it, other than avoiding wheat.

The problem is diagnosis. Because currently there isn’t a medical test telling you exactly whether you have a wheat sensitivity or not.

But things are changing…

Excess weight linked to eight more cancer types

Excess weight linked to eight more cancer types

There's yet another reason to maintain a healthy weight as we age. An international team of researchers has identified eight additional types of cancer linked to excess weight and obesity: stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, ovary, meningioma (a type of brain tumor), thyroid cancer and the blood cancer multiple myeloma.

Lipkin’s Monster ME/CFS Study: Microbes, Immunity & Big Data

Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity(CII) has seriously upped the ante on the initial microbe discovery project in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Their impressive, rigorous new study could point the way to diagnostic tests, and even treatments – but first they need the funds to complete the work.

Smudge

Smudge playing with Skie

Smudge and Baloo job-sharing my protection

Our latest new visitor was this lovely collie lad named Smudge. He played well with regular visitor, Skie. While Smudge was here for his holidays, old friends, Teekee and Baloo came for a couple of days day care and the two boys both wanted to be my personal guard dog.

Federal Report Says There's (Almost) No Evidence CBT/GET Work in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)

Hopefully the AHRQ’s reanalysis will help the blunt the emphasis given to CBT/GET in this field. What this field really, really, really needs, though, is to end the dominance of European government funded behavior based trials. No two entities should be able, simply by pouring money into a field, to dictate its treatment options, but that’s essentially what’s happened in ME/CFS.

Boswell

Saturday lie-in: Boswell has fun jumping on and owning the lump in the bed.

Another of our recent visitors was Boswell, a year old sable - foxy coloured - collie boy. He was also here during Maia's stay and the pair of young dogs ran and chased and played and wrestled ... and it didn't take long for the smaller and younger Maia to get the better of Boswell, tackling him and rolling onto the ground, time and time again. And he loved it!

August 8th, 2016: Understanding and Remembrance Day for Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

August 8th, 2016 is Understanding and Remembrance Day for Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, an important day in the ME community. It’s a day that is intended to bring attention to those whose voices are the most quiet, whose presence is so easily overlooked.

Maia

We met the lovely Maia before - incidentally, her sister is still looking for a home - and Maia has just been back for another stay. Here she is above after a few hours wrestling with Skie.

Maia rolls the big, strong Skie!

Butter wouldn't melt, would it?
